After a sea route to India and China was established, the prosperity of Turkmenistan diminshed.

2. Endurance

The "Long Ride" from Ashkabad to Moscow was the first long endurance ride. Undertaken in 1935, it was 4300km, completed in 82 days by a group of Akhal Teke stallions and their riders to demonstrate that these horses deserved to be preserved as a pure bred horse. They were being decimated in large numbers due to the mechanisation of Russia. It was to attract publicity to stop the slaughter of Akhal Tekes.

The second "Long Ride" was in 1988, from Ashkabad to Moscow, via a shorter route above the Caspian Sea.

It was 3300km long and took 60-61 days to complete. Again it was Akhal Teke stallions and their riders. Opposite is a photograph of Asheer, from Turkmenistan and his stallion, who undertook this ride with Geldi Karyzov and others.
